The Portimão area was once one of Portugal’s leading centers of the canning industry, with over 40 fully operational factories. This route offers a journey through this rich heritage while discovering the authentic flavours of the region.

Your experience begins at the only operating canning factory, where you can observe the artisanal production process and taste high-quality preserves. Then, visit the Portimão Municipal Market, where fresh fish arrives directly from the harbour, accompanied by a guide who explains the different species. Here, you can also explore fresh vegetables and traditional sweets.

Next, explore the Portimão Museum, showcasing the history of the canning industry with timeless displays of tools and equipment.

This route also offers a glimpse into traditional shopping practices: follow the local path where residents once collected their goods, carrying them in a beautiful, handwoven basket (Alcofa), honouring the region’s time-honoured traditions. This experience combines culture, gastronomy, and support for local businesses, connecting you to the rich fishing heritage of the Algarve.
